Hundreds of giant fish converge in Hanifaru Bay from May through November, when the lunar tide sucks krill and plankton to the surface, giving rays an all-you-can-eat buffet.

In June the Maldives created three new marine holiday maldives 2011 protected areas that include Hanifaru and other crucial feeding areas for mantas and whale sharks, the worlds largest fish.

Fishing, boat speeds, and waste disposal will be regulated. The new sanctuaries, however, will allow some diving and snorkeling-a healthy tourist trade may provide alternative livelihoods for fishers, experts say.

The government is committed to protecting and preserving the Maldives exceptional biodiversity, Maldives Environment Minister Mohamed Aslam said in a statement.

The marine environment is the bedrock of our economy, supporting our largest industries, tourism and fisheries.Roughly 40-foot-long (12.2-meter-long) long, plankton-hungry whale sharks also show up for the Hanifaru Bay feeding frenzy and stand to benefit from the June designation of three new marine refuges in the Maldives.

At least 120 of the shipping container-size sharks live in the ocean around the Maldives, one of the few places in the world where the gentle giants can be found year-round.

For now, Im not looking forward to having world champions in the Maldivesjust more surfers, says Nahshid Nasir (Nahu), 28, who started surfing 17 years ago on a plank of wood. People used to be closed to surfing. But now they are open.

Nahu says that while surfing began in the Maldives 30 years ago, real surfboards have only become widely used in the past twelve years or so. He grew up surfing in North Male, the one spot where there is no sea wall blocking out surf-worthy waves.

Nahu, also member of the Maldives Surf Association, explains how the growth of surfing in the Maldives now allows people to make a living off out of it. He uses himself, as well as Hussain Areef (Ibu), the Maldivian surfer who earned public affection after taking first place at an invitational surfing competition in Sri Lanka last year, as examples of people who are making a living out of the activity.

Nahu works as a surf judge, guide, and coach. He says that boys, and a few girls, across various atolls, anywhere between the ages of 13 to 50, have started surfing for leisure as equipment becomes more widespread.

Strategic Planning Is Important For Any Business

Strategic planning is an organization’s process of determining its strategy, or direction, and making decisions on allocating its resources to execute this strategy, including its capital and personnel. Several business analysis techniques can be used in strategic planning, including SWOT analysis (Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, and Threats ) and PEST analysis (Political, Economic, Social, and Technological analysis) or STEER analysis involving Socio-cultural, Technological, Economic, Ecological, and Regulatory factors and EPISTELS (Environment, Political, Informatic, Social, Technological, Economic, Legal and Spiritual) Strategic planning is the formal consideration of an organization’s future course. All strategic planning deals with at least one of three key questions:

1. “What do we do?”
2. “For whom do we do it?”
3. “How do we excel?”

The third question is better phrased “How can we surpass or fend off our competition?”. (Bradford and Duncan, page 1).
In many organizations, this is viewed as a process for determining where an organization is going over the next year or more -typically 3 to 5 years, although some extend their vision to 20 years.

To determine where it is headed, the company needs to know precisely where it stands now, then decide where it wants to go and how it will get there. The result is known as the “strategic plan”.

Business strategies can be categorized in many ways. One popular method is to assess strategies based on their degree of aggressiveness. Aggressiveness strategies are rated according to their marketing assertiveness, their risk propensity, financial leverage, product innovation, speed of decision making, and other measures of business aggressiveness. Typically the range of aggressiveness strategies is classified into four categories: prospector, defender, analyzer, and reactor.

Prospector strategy
This is the most aggressive of the four strategies. It typically involves active programs to expand into new markets and stimulate new opportunities.

Defender strategy
This strategy entails a decision not to aggressively pursue markets. As a result, they tend to do none of the things prospectors do. A defender strategy entails finding, and maintaining a safe and comparatively stable market

Analyzer
The analyzer is stands between the prospector and defender. This strategy takes fewer risks and makes fewer mistakes than a prospector, but is not as committed to stability as defenders. Most firms are analyzers.

Reactor
A reactor has no proactive strategy. They react to events as they occur. They respond only when they are forced to by macro-environmental pressures. This is the least effectual of the four strategies. It is without direction or focus.
